More than one-third of organizations increased benefits offerings in the last 12 months, according to the Society for Human ResourceManagement’s (SHRM) 2018 Employee Benefits report. Over the last five years, family-friendly benefits have been on an upward trend particularly in the area of elder care. According to the report, companies are providing programs like elder care referral services, on-ramping programs for family members dealing with elder care responsibilities, geriatric counseling, and elder care in-home assessments.

This movement to provide a caregiver-friendly workplace makes sense given that one in five U.S. workers are currently caring for an aging loved one. And this issue is growing as our population ages. As an HR professional, what should you look for when researching caregiver support solutions to help your employees balance work and caregiving?

Four Tips for Finding the Right Tools for Caregivers

  1. Digital tools can be easier for organizations and employees to use
  2. Access to a broad range of information and resources is important as caregivers have to manage issues related to healthcare, finances and senior living
  3. Access to personal, customized support can reduce stress for working caregivers who are juggling many responsibilities
  4. Allowing family members to use an employees’ caregiver benefits is ideal since typically more than one person in a family is involved in caring for an aging loved one

The goal is to find a solution that helps employees understand, organize and manage their caregiving responsibilities so they feel less overwhelmed and more focused at work.
